THE BURIAL OF THE SARDINE (EL ENTIERRO DE LA SARDINA)

The burial of the Sardine takes place during the end of the Carnaval season. Although in most of Spain the sardine is buried, the towns in Fuerteventura , including Corralejo, set the sardine on fire.

This tradition happens after the sardine has been paraded into the streets. It is then set alight on the beach of Corralejo, next to the old town harbor.

The burial of the sardine dates back hundreds of years. It has been painted by numerous artists such as Francisco de Goya.

This tradition concludes with very loud and amazing fireworks.

THE KITE FESTIVAL AT LA PLAYA DEL BURRO

The Kite Festival at La Playa del Burro is an annual event that attracts numerous kite flyers from all over the world. Held every November, the weekend-long Kite Festival begins on Friday afternoons with a free fly of kites wherein spectators take a glimpse of the kite displays.

On Saturday, the excellent kite flyers demonstrate their dazzling flying skills.

The main event of this festival is held on the last day where almost 150 kites are given to children to have a go. Various raffles are drawn and numerous prizes are given out. The highlight, however, is the exciting kite combat where stunt kites participate in one-on-one aerial warfare. It ends when the first kite falls.

After dinner, the Kite Festival is concluded with amazing fireworks that light up the Corralejo skies.
