Burying the Sardine
This Spanish tradition is usually held on March 5 as a conclusion to the annual carnival. After parading the sardine throughout the streets of Puerto Del Rosario, it is burned down. The festivity is then concluded with a dramatic display of fireworks.
Los Archipencos
The Archipencos is a customary part of the carnival in Puerto del Rosario. It is akin to the Fuerteventura carnivals and the one difference is that it is afloat in the water. Different homemade vessels compete to sail from the port to the town s small beach.
New Year s Eve Fiesta
The biggest celebration on Fuerteventura during New Year s Eve is held in its capital city. It commences before twelve midnight in the church square.
It is a Spanish tradition to swallow a grape every time the church bell strikes. It is believed that it will bring good fortune. When the clock ticks to midnight, the fireworks will explode, signaling the start of the celebration. Usually an all-night merriment, live music, a variety of drinks and foods and dancing are everywhere.
