The most common food in Betancuria is fish, which is normally served with local sauces and tasty flavorings.
Fuerteventura , including all its towns, is known for its ancient delicacy known as gofio amasado. This dish is made from a mixture of grain flour ( gofio ), potatoes, broth, milk, water, wine and honey. It is then served in a zurron or a fabric bag.
Another specialty is the papas arrugadas - unpeeled potatoes steamed with a mixture of salt. It is steamed until the skin wrinkles and served with mojo sauce - a local hot sauce.
Fish dishes in Betancuria include Sea bass, Cazon con mojo, Parrot fish or vieja, Sea bream, Tuna fish, Sword fish and Shark - which are mostly salted and poached and served with cooked vegetables.
When dining at Betancuria, don t forget to taste the queso majorero - a local goat s milk cheese that is prepared in various flavors and textures. This Fuerteventura cheese is exported worldwide.
